What does it mean to be emotionally free? Is our happiness attached to the behavior of others? Do we seek love from those who do not love themselves? Is it possible to love ourselves so deeply we are free from the harmful effects of negative thoughts and words?
Think for a minute of a time we reacted poorly to a negative comment said by someone who claims to love us? Were we free, or were our emotions attached to the comment thereby sending us in a downward spiral? In a way, our emotional stability was chained to that one comment.
When I contemplate emotional freedom, I think of it as being so centered in my self-love that no matter what others say or do, I maintain a state of emotional balance. One way to know if we are in our self-love would be to notice our reactions to the challenges life throws at us.
Our reactions to how we handle difficulties reveals to us if we are free or a prisoner of our weak mind. I say weak mind because our mind is always looking for someone to blame. Our self-love, originating in our heart, is always loving and understanding, never having a reason to blame or criticize.
Think of a time when we were with those we love, we didn’t have a care in the world. We were happy, joyful, at peace. We were experiencing emotional freedom. It is unconditional love that gives us the opportunity to be free.
When in a constant state of self-love, our emotional stability is much too important to waste getting upset at things that don’t matter, or have nothing to do with us. Also we understand that those who are mean, rude, or selfish in a harmful way, are disconnected from their self-love. In a sense they are bound to their negativity, unaware of the healing power of self-love.
Emotional freedom allows us to walk through life knowing we can choose our reaction to any situation, good or bad. Yet we also know we do not want to allow a negative situation to control us emotionally. We can see challenging situations for what they are, learn what we can, then move on. All the while, we are both unattached and free from the harmful affects of negative energy associated with difficult situations.
Imagine being so deep in self-love what we see on the news has no effect on our emotional health. Or what someone says to us in a demeaning manner does not move us from our place of emotional center. We love ourselves enough to understand our emotional freedom is too important to become involved in the negativity that often defines the lives of others.
We must also turn this love on ourselves. Can we love ourselves enough to be kind to ourselves when we fall back into old unhealthy patterns? Life can be difficult, not every day will be easy. But if we know emotional freedom arrives when we love ourselves, it’s easier to return to a place of center when life challenges us.
