What would happen if we turned off the television, put our phone on airplane mode, and did our best to silence the mental chatter in our head? Would we begin to relax, or would we get stressed out over the news and posts we may be missing? Would we feel as if we are being left behind? Is it possible our mental chatter would be working overtime to get us to open our phone?
In the busy world in which we now live, finding stillness can be quite difficult. But that is exactly what we need, a few moments of quietude. Yet is so hard because we have become addicted to the adrenaline rush we get when we are inundated with images from social media, as well as TV, and internet streaming.
The thing is, with all the stimulation from the outside world, we end up disconnected from the truth of who we are. Because of the way social media, network broadcasting, and streaming services are designed we begin to align with things that have no real value to our emotional or spiritual well-being.
In a sense, our ability to focus with a clear, quiet mind has been hijacked by the devices we can’t seem to live without. This makes it harder to really know who we truly are or to find inner peace. Why? Because our addiction to know what is going on in the outside world is stronger than our desire to know our own truth.
This also makes meditation more challenging, because our mind is a tornado of thoughts and images. But it is through meditation we regain a sense of inner peace. In this state of stillness, we may begin to hear the voice of our authentic selves. This is where we reunite with the truth of who we are.
There is no doubt the outside world is a fascinating place with much to see and do. But to truly benefit from this abundance, we must be in alignment with who we are really meant to be. Otherwise we are just going through the motions without the advantages of knowing the depth of our own being.
Once we learn to silence the noise, we may begin to hear the words of our inner voice. This voice originates in our heart and only speaks words of love, kindness, and compassion. All the other voices have been created by our ego which is always willing to tell us we are not good enough, or how we will never measure up.
As we get more comfortable with our inner voice we realize that love is the foundation of who we are. We may not understand this at first, because we have been so abused by our self-doubt, negative self-talk and who the outside world thinks we should be. When we realize our true self only speaks words of love, we begin to use this compassionate wisdom as a guidebook through life.
It is here in stillness a quiet mind will benefit us in unforeseen ways. This is the place where we can hear our inner voice with the most clarity. We know this voice is honest and true by the deep love we experience. We cannot deny its authenticity because we feel as if we are wrapped in the arms of unconditional love. This feeling may be new to us but we trust it without question.
Yes, the world can come at us quickly, bombarding us with more information than we can process, over stimulating our nervous system. Yet not all of what we see, hear, or read is worth our attention. We soon learn that we can look within ourselves to find the guidance we need to navigate life’s challenges. All it requires is the strength to silence the noise of the outside world, and the focus to hear the loving voice of our true selves.
The quality of our life is then determined by our ability to ignore outside distractions and focus on the wisdom we receive from our inner voice. Will we look to social media for advice? Or will we be courageous enough to look within ourselves for answers to the questions that only our loving inner voice can answer?
In the stillness of our true selves the outside world is something to observe, but its energy is not to be absorbed. This way we maintain our emotional center, giving us the strength to walk through life knowing the truth of who we are.
