Imagine you are a Knight in shining armor called upon to save your village from a raging monster. You have the razor sharp sword, the battle gear, the helmet, the white horse, and the support of your community. You have proven in battle that you possess the skills to defeat any opponent. You have been chosen because of your bravery and commitment to upholding the sanctity of life.

As you study this monster you soon realize your sword has no power against this enemy. You can’t believe it but this creature grows stronger when it is hated. How can that be? It’s as if any negativity toward this foe increases its energy and strength. You suddenly realize you need a new plan.

After serious contemplation, you come upon the realization that if negativity makes the monster stronger, then unconditional love might disarm your opponent. This makes no sense, but it’s worth a try. Instead of fighting with anger, hatred, and negativity, you bring love to the conflict. Maybe the monster is a monster because it has never known the feelings of unconditional love.

Rather than fight, you radiate love to the monster. At first the monster is confused, expecting a surge of energy through your hatred, but it feels something different because no other challenger has ever sent it love. At first the monster tries to shake it off with a burst of aggression, but your love is too strong.

The façade of the monster starts to crumble as love, possibly for the first time, begins to permeate its consciousness. This beast realizes its whole being, its entire life has been based on fear. A fear of not being enough, not being worthy. A fear of being ridiculed because it wanted something different in life than the others in its circle.

From these fears anger became the way the monster expressed itself. This anger then became its identity. Others were afraid of the wrath of the monster so they avoided all contact. This made the monster more angry. Life began to spiral out of control as the monster gained strength from its anger.

But once the monster felt your unconditional love, its anger began to fade. As this happened, the fears the monster once had lost their strength as the monster began to see that all it ever wanted was to be loved without conditions or expectations. Loved for who the monster truly is, not hated for the façade that anger often creates.

As the monster experiences more of your unconditional love, the monster begins to shed its false persona, and the truth of the monster is revealed. The monster is just like any one of us, someone who has never had the experience of unconditional love.

Through this transformation, brought on by love, you realize the monster is no longer a monster, only someone in need of unconditional love. The love you send freely to this being has changed its life, changed the lives of those in the village, and showed everyone the power of unconditional love.

When we hate we are only perpetuating more hate, giving strength and energy to hate. But when we choose unconditional love, no matter how difficult it may be, we expand the flow of love around the globe.

At some point in life all of us have been the monster in someone else’s story. We may even have been the monster in our own story. Yet that doesn’t mean we have to continue to live this way.

The monster in this story was defeated by unconditional love, not hate or anger. Is this analogy too simplistic for the times we are in today? Can we take an honest look around to see if anger and hate has made life better for anyone? Is it possible to disarm those who preach hate and anger with love?

Remember, the monster created a façade as a way to protect itself from feeling rejected, unloved, and ridiculed. This persona also blocked its ability to feel love. It may take time to break through the walls people build around their heart, but it will only happen when we express unconditional love. Yet we must be courageous enough to try. Otherwise anger and hate will turn us into monsters.
